    1. A MemorialIn Nagasaki they built a little roomdark and soundproof where you cango in all alone and close the door and cry.William Stafford, Poet Laureate of Oregon from 1975 until 1990, crafted over 20,000 poems during his time on Earth- a staggering output. A pacifist—soft-spoken, yet fierce—Stafford was a teacher, a mentor, a wide-eyed, gracious observer and recorder of life. His poems are clean, without guile or pretense and most often set in the natural world. He eschewed the rules of wr [...]

    2. The best and most quotable is this fourth book in the Poets on Poetry series about William Stafford. As an example, here is some of what he has to say in the section "Some Suggestions from Experience"If you can get dumb enough you can write marvelous poems about things that are really close to you.The key to writing poetry may be a readiness. Relax, don't resist. Be a receiver.Writing is effective in so far as it has verbal events in it, not the assertion of feelings. We need to write poems that [...]

    3. Reading Stafford's "Poets on Poetry" series books are like being dropped into the middle of a wine-soaked conversation that has been going on for a couple of hours now. Half the time you don't know where you are and the other half you're leaning in and listening hard because you know this is important stuff if you could just enter into the rhythm of it. This book in particular, with its strange collection of conversations, interviews and poems, reveals more about Stafford as a human being and I [...]

The interview with Richard Hugo is hilarious and shows just how different [...]

    5. Beautiful book about one of my favorite poets. Through interviews, poetry, and writings, Stafford is confirmed as a circumspect individual who believed - to quote Roque Dalton - that poetry, like bread, is for everyone. If I ever start to feel anxious about the poetry "industry," I know it's time to flip through this book. Lots of great quotes; will try to add some later. Every poet should read this.
